The history of Parkville

The Parkville we know today began in 1838 when Colonel George S. Park purchased the plot and river landing concession. It quickly became one of the busiest river ports on the Missouri River as Colonel Park erected by 1850 warehouses and a large stone hotel. After a tumultuous time before, during and after the American Civil War, Colonel Park and Dr. John McAfee started Park College in 1875 using the hotel as its first academic building. Today Parkville has all of the historic beauty of a river town coupled with an eclectic mix of shops restaurants and art galleries. Park College has grown into a University of 12,000 students in one of those beautiful settings in the country. There are few places that have integrated nature, history and the smooth charm of a university presence like Parkville has done.
