The history of Atchison
Founded in 1855 Atchison quickly became a supply center in the new Kansas Territory. Its location on the Missouri River made it a natural stop for river boats needing resupply and plying their trade. Atchison served as a staging point for the Jayhawker'sĀ raids into Missouri during the American Civil War and after the conclusion of that conflict sought to remake itself by becoming a rail head. It lost that battle to Kansas City and Omaha but was instrumental in producing machinery as locomotives switched from steam to diesel engines. Atchison is also known as the birthplace of Amelia Earhart and is considered one of America' most haunted places.
